7 Ways To Appreciate Long Island Summers

Yes, even the cityits.

7 Ways To Appreciate Long Island Summers

1. The Beaches

Since this is one of the most obvious points, I decided to have this be at the top of the list. People from all over the country and even the world come and visit for our beaches, but the coolest part I find about the Island is the variety in beaches we have. Whether you want to go in the ocean to surf or jump some waves and feel the soft sand between your toes, walk down the coast of the much calmer bay to collect some seashells, or even jump off some of the big rocks in the tough and rocky sound, Long Island truly has it all. In many neighborhoods there are even staircases built so that all the people that live there can just walk right down to the beach from their homes.

2. Yard Sales!

Usually yard sales are those things we like to stop at when we are lucky enough to stumble upon one, but on Long Island, yard sales are so common you can go out every weekend and find tons just driving. From going on yard sale adventures with family and friends I have accumulated some really cool and greatly priced stuff. Whether it's some cool and unique pieces of art, some cool jewelry, or even beautiful furniture, you never know what you will find at a yard sale.

3. The out of towners that come and visit.

Yes they are the ones we can spot from a mile away, wearing their khaki shorts and palm tree shirts, talking about their exercise classes and their new gluten-free diets. They are the ones that clog up the streets making our commutes to wherever we have to go almost doubled. They are the kind of people we all just love to hate and for some reason enjoy complaining about. They are the the people who live here for just the summer, usually from the city, known to us as cityits. Although those of us who live on Long Island year round love to complain about them, there definitely is an appreciation that comes with it, because they make the Island an interesting place and really help keep the economy successful. The fact that they are willing to spend ever summer here further proves that it's an awesome place.

4. Weekends in the City

While many people that live in the city year round love to escape to Long Island, those of us who live here love to escape to the city. Whether it's to explore the free museums, see a Broadway show, check out Times Square, or even to go clubbing at night, the largest city in the country is just a short train ride away.

5. The many, many fairs

Upstate and central New York may be home to some of the largest festivals and fairs, but Long Island sure does have the most. Whether it’s 'Alive on 25' every other Thursday night in Riverhead, the Brookhaven fair, the Jamesport 4th of July fair or the Strawberry Festival. Long Island has it all, and you could probably find one almost every weekend.

6. The farm stands every mile

You name it, we probably grow it on Long Island and sell it on a farm stand. Whether it’s fresh watermelon, sugar snap peas or even fresh homemade honey. Plus we also have tons of pick your own fruits and vegetables, too.

7. The Summer Concerts!

Being so close to the city, Jones Beach, Nassau Coliseum, and even Fire Island, we really don’t have to drive too far at all for summer concerts and we really get our pick of what we want to listen to. On top of that, Long Island's semi-dense population makes for a lot of radio stations.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
