Stop Acting Like You're Too Cool To Have School Spirit

Newsflash: you don't look cool, you just look like a d**k.

It's Welcome Week and the beginning of a new academic year which means that there are plenty of events and involvement fairs happening on campus in attempts to get students involved. As a highly involved individual, I help execute some of these events as well as try to inform new (or returning) students about opportunities on campus.

While many people are genuinely interested and kind, I witness far too many people acting like they are too cool to be involved and/or participate in fun events, and it infuriates me. SO many people work hard to put on events and programs that will keep people interested and engaged, and for you to sit there and make fun of the people actually enjoying themselves is pathetic.

If you're a freshman or a transfer student, do not act too cool to be involved; you're choosing to miss out on amazing opportunities, new friends, and free stuff! College is all about trying new things, exploring different clubs, and enjoying yourself, so get out there! You're only selling yourself short by not getting more involved. If you try something and you hate, then fine, but stop refusing to go to events because they seem cheesy or nerdy. Having school spirit is fun!

Additionally, I think a lot of freshmen can get caught up in the party scene and trying to "show off" for their new friends. Trust me, I get it; parties are fun and so is meeting all the people at parties! However, most of the people you go out and get drunk with aren't going to turn into your lasting, genuine friendships from college. I'm not saying you can't become friends with the people you party with, but drunken conversations are likely to hold little weight and be forgotten in the morning. Try to meet people with common interests as you find the events and clubs that you're drawn towards.

Disinterest is not attractive, nor will it help you in college and beyond.

I would always rather be friends with the enthusiastic, passionate person than the one distancing themselves from showing any school spirit. You chose this school for a reason, so try to love all it has to offer you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
