The Persons Who Make College Bearable

A Letter To My Unofficial Roommates

My Persons,

When school first started, I was worried about whether or not I had made the right living situation decision. It was scary and intimidating to think about what living off campus would entail - the gas, the late night drives back home, carrying around an immensely heavy backpack, and not having a place to take naps at between classes.

Because of you guys, however, I have been able to get the best of both worlds.

When college first starts, it’s scary to think about whether or not you are going to be able to make friends and be included, and this is especially the case when you’re an off campus student.

In college some people meet their lifelong best friends, some meet their future spouses to be, some even meet their bridesmaids and bestmen. When the year first started, I met you guys, my unofficial roommates and ever since then you have made me feel like one of your own.

Official contracts may not say that I am your roommate, but it might as well become official. It started out with me just coming to say hi and casually hanging out, to now being considered the honorary member of your floor. When we are hanging out in your room, you introduce me as the third roommate.

Now you aren’t even surprised when you walk in and find me sitting in your room all alone.

You guys tolerate me and love me like your love your own roommates. You know that I have chapter on Tuesday’s and know the days which you will see me more and the days when you won’t. I am there when you guys have your room cleaning days, I have heard some of your inside jokes, I know what kind of coffee you guys drink, and I know where to find the nail polish and the extra hair ties.

You guys rescued me when I needed a white elephant gift, and we always seem to get sick at the same time. You have allowed me to see you in all of your ways throughout the day and you guys have seen the same of me.

Your futon is my second bed. Your RA’s know who I am and you invite me to your floor events. I could seriously not be more grateful. Living off campus is not all fun and games and it is so nice knowing that whenever I need, I am always welcome into your dorms.

So again, thank you guys for being my second family and for giving me a home away from home.

Love always,

Your Unofficial Roommate

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
