I Was Followed Into A Bathroom By A Man Hours After Arriving To My Dorm Room

All new college freshmen move into their dorms think they are safe and are protected by a good school environment. However, a few students may not share the same experience. Violence often strikes at the most unexpected timing when we often don't know how to react.

In six short hours of moving into the new upperclassmen dorm room, I was followed to the restroom by a guy on my hall. After a mostly positive freshman dorm experience on an all girl hall, this came as very frightening considering not many people had moved in yet.

He was quiet, swift, and by his actions, seemed as if he had done it before. I went into the stall and locked the large wooden door that separated me from the hallway. Then, I heard distant footsteps and an abrupt turn of a door handle, thinking someone was trying to come in or use the stall next to me. The dorm floor was unusually quiet, which made this event somewhat unusual.

As I opened the stall door, the guy that followed me pointed a gun-like hand gesture and said boo. I screamed in horror processing that a guy had followed me to the bathroom. In the mere seconds I had to gather my thoughts, I said to him following me to the bathroom was a bit stalkerish. He was embarrassed that I corrected his wrongdoing and introduced himself. He went back in his dorm room and I went back in mine.

What was supposed to be a nice first night moving back to school for my sophomore year became very frightening and fearful. I was terrified and didn't know what to do. I felt trapped and was scared that he would do something similar like knocking on my door, or try to break into my room and harm me.

I've experienced relationship violence before but the difference in this situation was being alone. I didn't know anyone on my hall that I could tell what happened. I didn't think the guy would bother me again but I couldn't know for sure. I had to make sure I was safe for good. The next morning, I knew my only option was to file a police report.

Within fifteen minutes I heard a police officer knocking on the guy's door. I heard him deny to the police officer that he had followed me into the bathroom(a clear sign that he is a troubled guy). The police officer then came to my room to confirm the incident. He believed my report and wanted me to let him know if anything else happened.

I'm still traumatized by being followed and haven't used that bathroom since. Incidents like these are another reason why dorm safety is so important including locking your door and reporting unusual behavior on your hall. It's unfortunate that I was followed, but is another example of why you should take care of your community so it doesn't happen to the next girl.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
