What It Is Like To Be The Daughter Of A Single Mother
Rhiannon

My mom is my best friend. Ever since I was born, it’s been just me and my mother against the world. However, she may have been married twice, but in the end it was just us.

Ever since the moment I was born, she defended me. I was born with hip dysplasia, and right out of the gate I needed a hip brace. One nurse rolled me out in a bassinet to another part of the building to get the brace put on. However, this person started running with me in the bassinet, and both my mother and grandmother chased this man down and gave them a piece of their minds. When I was in pre-school I had a babysitter abuse me, and the second I told my mom, she got on the phone with someone who had the same caregiver, and asked if the same thing happened to them as well. The mother called her back and said her child said the same thing happened to them; that babysitter could not have been fired faster.

As I got older, she continued defending me. It got bad in middle school as well as high school. I was bullied severely; my mother home-schooled me for many years. As time went on, and I became a teenager with raging hormones in high school, we may have had some disagreements, but she was still the shoulder I cried on. She was always my getaway car.

And as college went on, we grew much closer. I pulled my head out of my ass. She became the person I told everything to. As well as being away at college, if I was ever hurting or simply I just wanted to see my mommy, I knew I could always come home. However, my mom and I have polar opposite personalities. My mother is the more trusting and less sarcastic type.

My mother may have always been my support in my personal, academic or work life; I believe I have supported hers as well. My mother is a real estate agent, meaning she doesn’t make a whole heck of a lot of money. I have seen my mom go through some of the hardest things. And she also has shared with me some of her life experiences at my age, which has helped us relate as well as understand each other much better. My mother’s struggles have shown me what I should copy as well as shouldn’t.

All in all, my mom has been a big reason why I am the person I am today. I love my mom, and she is my strength. I wouldn’t be anywhere without her. I’m pretty sure it will be me and my mom against the world for the rest of our lives, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
